Markus Hinterhäuser

Markus Hinterhäuser is the former Intendant (director) of the prestigious Salzburger Festspiele. He was recently dismissed from his position following a conflict with the Aufsichtsgremium (supervisory board) regarding leadership culture. The Kuratorium (board of trustees) announced his departure and appointed Karin Bergmann as the interim Intendant. Hinterhäuser's exit has triggered a period of uncertainty and is considered a major crisis for the festival, comparable to the situation in 1944/45. Ironically, Bergmann was Hinterhäuser's preferred candidate for the Schauspielsparte (drama section). Despite the turmoil surrounding his departure, Hinterhäuser's influence is still felt, and his successor faces the challenge of maintaining the festival's high standards amidst internal strife. He was also involved in the Festtage der Oper in Berlin.
