Mamady Doumbouya

Mamady Doumbouya is a military leader who led a coup in Guinea in 2021. He recently won the presidential election held in December 2025, securing over 80% of the vote according to reports, after barring key opposition challengers. This election was the first since the military takeover. Following his victory, Doumbouya was sworn in as president in January 2026. However, his rise to power has been met with significant opposition. Recently, his government dissolved 40 political parties, including the main opposition groups, a move that critics say establishes a one-party state. This action has prompted the main opposition leader, Cellou Dalein Diallo, to call for "direct resistance" against Doumbouya's leadership, further escalating political tensions in Guinea.
