The Ukraine war in numbers: People, territory, money
Four years into the Russia-Ukraine war, Al Jazeera examines the human, territorial, and financial costs of the conflict. Casualty estimates vary widely, with both sides presenting figures that favor their narrative. However, estimates suggest roughly two million military casualties overall, with Russia potentially suffering over 1.2 million casualties, including at least 325,000 deaths, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stated 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed. The CSIS estimates up to 600,000 Ukrainian casualties, including as many as 140,000 deaths. The war, the largest in Europe since World War II, has also significantly impacted the global economy, with Russia facing unprecedented sanctions.
