What has Pope Leo warned about AI – and why that’s significant
Pope Leo XIV, in his first papal encyclical titled "Magnifica humanitas: On Safeguarding the Human Person in the Time of Artificial Intelligence," issued in May 2026, has warned that artificial intelligence must be "disarmed" and people protected from its disruptive effects. Presented at the Vatican alongside AI experts, the encyclical urges policymakers to protect workers' rights and children, and calls on AI companies to temper their competition, driven by a desire for geopolitical or commercial dominance. The Pope emphasized that AI should not be solely in private hands and stressed the need for robust legal frameworks and independent oversight. He specifically cautioned against the use of AI in warfare, stating that AI-directed weaponry is impermissible and that "no algorithm can make war morally acceptable."
