Venezuela quake death toll rises to nearly 3,000
Nearly 3,000 people have died in Venezuela following twin earthquakes that struck on June 24th. Official figures released on Saturday reported the death toll had risen to 2,954, an increase of over 300 from the previous day. The disaster, one of Latin America's worst earthquake events, has left thousands homeless and tens of thousands still missing. The coastal La Guaira area, north of Caracas, was the hardest hit, with many residential buildings destroyed. International rescue teams are beginning to conclude their search operations for survivors, although families continue to search for loved ones in the rubble.
