Hydropower projects are large-scale energy generation facilities that harness the power of moving water, typically through dams and turbines, to produce electricity. In Nepal, these projects are significant for the nation's development and energy sector. Currently, hydropower projects in Nepal are newsworthy due to a recent disaster where flash floods have caused widespread damage and resulted in a critical search and rescue operation. At least 900 workers are reported missing from 12 different hydropower project sites, making the recovery efforts extremely challenging. The difficult terrain and the nature of tunnel construction within these projects are complicating the search for survivors. The ongoing situation highlights the inherent risks associated with large infrastructure projects in geologically sensitive areas and the immediate human cost when such events occur.
