Tens of thousands of supporters of Serbia's student-led opposition movement gathered in central Belgrade for their final rally ahead of Sunday's parliamentary election. The movement, known as The Student List, aims to end the 14-year rule of veteran leader Aleksandar Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS). The vote follows nearly two years of student-led protests that were triggered by a fatal incident in 2024. The Student List is fielding 250 candidates on a platform focused on fighting corruption, with many being academics or political outsiders. Vucic held a rival rally across town as the opposition movement converged on Slavija Square, a site of previous major protests.
“We are putting an end to 14 years of humiliation, chaos and betrayal, and to decades of putting personal and party interests above yours,”
The Student List is seeking to unseat Vucic’s right-wing populist Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), which has been in power for more than 14 years.
The vote follows nearly two years of student-led protests triggered by the 2024 collapse of a canopy at a newly renovated railway station in Novi Sad that killed 16 people.
