The Western Han dynasty, which spanned from 206 BC to AD 9, is currently in the news due to recent archaeological and historical discoveries shedding light on its rich cultural heritage. Notably, the origins of tofu are often traced to this period, specifically to Liu An, the King of Huainan. Fascinated by immortality, Liu An and his alchemists experimented with soybeans, gypsum, and spring water, leading to the accidental creation of tofu. This culinary innovation has since become a significant symbol in Chinese cuisine. Additionally, a 2,000-year-old board game called Liubo, meaning "six sticks," has been unearthed. This game, described as a relative of chess, was played by both royals and commoners, indicating its widespread popularity and cultural significance during the Western Han era. These findings highlight the dynasty's contributions to both food culture and leisure activities, underscoring its enduring relevance.
