al-Hol

Al-Hol is a camp in northeastern Syria primarily housing relatives of suspected ISIL (ISIS) fighters. It has become newsworthy due to recent instability and changes in management. Kurdish-led forces, who previously controlled the camp, withdrew, leading to unrest and mass escapes of residents in February 2026. Aid agencies were forced to suspend operations due to the deteriorating security situation. Simultaneously, Kurdish authorities released 34 Australian relatives of ISIL fighters from a separate camp, Roj, with plans to repatriate them from Damascus. In response to the escalating crisis, the United Nations announced it will take over management of al-Hol.
