Cabo Delgado

Cabo Delgado is a province in Mozambique known for its significant natural gas reserves. It gained prominence due to the presence of a large-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project led by TotalEnergies. However, the region has been plagued by escalating violence, leading TotalEnergies to halt the $20 billion project indefinitely in 2021. Recently, TotalEnergies has restarted construction of the LNG project. This resumption is newsworthy because the project's gas production is now being considered as a potential source for Ukraine, which is seeking to diversify its gas supply due to the conflict with Russia. The Ukrainian president has engaged in discussions with Mozambique, highlighting Cabo Delgado's growing geopolitical significance in the context of global energy security.
