Crete

Crete, a Greek island, is the location of recent incidents involving migrants and asylum seekers attempting to enter Europe. These events are newsworthy due to the human cost and highlight the ongoing migration crisis in the Mediterranean. In December 2025, Greek authorities rescued nearly 540 asylum seekers from a fishing boat south of the island. Tragically, around the same time, the bodies of at least 17 migrants were discovered in a partially deflated boat southwest of Crete, marking Greece's worst shipwreck in two years. Two survivors from that incident were hospitalized in critical condition. These events underscore the perilous journeys undertaken by migrants and asylum seekers and the challenges faced by Greece in managing migration flows.
