Etorofu

Etorofu, also known as Iturup, is one of the four islands in the Kuril chain that are currently claimed by both Japan and Russia. These islands are historically significant and are referred to as the Northern Territories by Japan and the Southern Kurils by Russia. The islands have been a point of contention between the two nations for decades. Recently, the islands have become newsworthy due to Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to Iturup. This visit has drawn strong condemnation from the Japanese government, with Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi summoning the Russian ambassador and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi calling the actions "absolutely unacceptable." Japan maintains that the islands are inherently Japanese territory, both historically and under international law. The ongoing dispute over these islands highlights the persistent territorial tensions between Japan and Russia.
