Heard Island

Heard Island is a remote Australian territory located in the subantarctic region, approximately 4,000 km southwest of Perth. It is a significant breeding ground for over a million seabirds and seals. Recently, the island has become newsworthy due to a severe outbreak of the H5N1 bird flu virus. This deadly virus has caused mass mortality among southern elephant seal pups, with studies indicating that more than 13,000 pups, representing over 75% of the population observed in recent surveys, have died. Scientists have confirmed the spread of the virus on the island, using data collected in October and January.
