Karakoram mountain range

The Karakoram mountain range, a significant part of the Greater Himalayas, is currently in the news due to multiple developments. The region, spanning Pakistan, India, and China, is facing heightened concerns over Glacial Lake Outburst Flooding (GLOF) incidents. A recent GLOF event from the Shisper glacier in Pakistan's Gilgit-Baltistan region caused damage to houses and a community hall, highlighting the vulnerability of local communities to climate change impacts. This comes as Pakistan prepares for its monsoon season, with fears of heavy rains and floods prompting a nationwide alert. Adding to the region's tragic news, renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja was among ten people killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak, a prominent peak within the Karakoram range. Purja, known for his mountaineering achievements, died at the age of 43. These events underscore the dual challenges of extreme weather events and the inherent dangers of high-altitude mountaineering in the Karakoram.
