Messina

Messina is a port city in Sicily, Italy, recently in the news due to a significant art heist. The regional museum of Messina, known as MuMe, was targeted by thieves on a national holiday, August 15th. The stolen items include four highly valuable Renaissance artworks by the 15th-century master Antonello da Messina. Among the stolen pieces are three panels from his Polyptych of San Gregorio and a double-sided panel featuring the Madonna and Christ in Pietà. The thieves are believed to have exploited the city's focus on the religious festival La Vara to carry out the crime. This event highlights the vulnerability of cultural heritage and brings renewed attention to the artistic legacy of Antonello da Messina, a prominent figure of the Early Renaissance whose works are now missing from a Sicilian museum.
