Antonello da Messina was a prominent Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, active in the 15th century. He is renowned for his mastery of oil painting techniques, which he learned from Northern European artists, and for his realistic portraits and religious scenes. His innovative approach significantly influenced the development of Renaissance art in Italy. Recently, Antonello da Messina has become newsworthy due to a significant art heist. Four of his most important artworks were stolen from the Regional Museum of Messina (MuMe) in Sicily on August 15, 2026, during a national holiday. The stolen pieces include three panels from the Polyptych of San Gregorio and a double-sided panel featuring the Madonna and Christ in Pietà. The theft occurred while public attention was diverted by a local religious festival, La Vara.
