First, archaeologists discovered the world's oldest known cave art on Muna Island, part of southeastern Sulawesi. These hand stencils, dating back approximately 67,800 years, were found in limestone caves and suggest early human symbolic thought and migration patterns. The discovery challenges previous timelines of human creativity and artistic expression. Second, a regional passenger plane carrying 11 people crashed in a mountainous region on Sulawesi, specifically on the slope of Mount Bulusaraung. Rescue teams have recovered wreckage, highlighting the dangers of air travel in the region's challenging terrain. These events underscore Sulawesi's importance in understanding human history and the ongoing challenges faced by its inhabitants.
