Zgorzelec

Zgorzelec is a Polish city directly bordering Görlitz, Germany. It's currently newsworthy due to two main factors: the extension of border controls between Poland and Germany and the development of a cross-border heating network. The extended border controls, aimed at managing migration, are causing traffic disruptions and frustration, as highlighted by Zgorzelec's mayor, Rafał Gronicz. Many Polish citizens cross the border daily for work in Saxony. Simultaneously, Zgorzelec is involved in a collaborative effort with Görlitz to establish a climate-neutral heating network utilizing biomass and solar thermal energy. This project is significant as cities are increasingly required to develop plans for sustainable energy provision. The cross-border nature of the heating network exemplifies international cooperation in addressing climate change and energy security.
