Chemical Industry

The European chemical industry is currently facing significant challenges. The EU's reformed emissions trading system (ETS) is driving up the cost of CO2 emissions for energy-intensive industries like chemicals, requiring them to pay billions annually. Simultaneously, Germany's chemical industry is experiencing an "erosion of industrial structures," facing an existential crisis potentially leading to relocation of production. This has prompted the German government, industry, and unions to develop a joint plan to address the situation. Furthermore, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is recommending a ban on PFAS "forever chemicals" due to health concerns, although with potential exceptions. This ban could significantly impact the industry, as PFAS are widely used and represent a multi-billion euro market. The industry's ability to adapt to stricter environmental regulations, economic pressures, and potential chemical bans will determine its future viability in Europe.
