About
PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of thousands of man-made chemicals widely used in various industries and consumer products due to their water and heat resistance. They are often referred to as 'forever chemicals' because they persist in the environment and human body for extended periods. PFAS are newsworthy due to growing concerns about their potential health risks, including liver damage, immune system effects, reduced fertility, and cancer. Recently, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has recommended a broad restriction of PFAS within the European Union, with some exceptions for essential uses where alternatives are unavailable. This recommendation follows scientific reports highlighting the widespread pollution caused by PFAS and the urgent need for regulatory action. The EU Commission is currently working on a potential ban. This issue is relevant because PFAS are ubiquitous in everyday products, raising concerns about widespread human exposure and the potential for long-term health consequences. Greenpeace has also raised concerns about microplastics and toxins released from heating food in plastic containers.
