Comité international de la Croix-Rouge

The Comité International de la Croix-Rouge (CICR), or International Committee of the Red Cross, is a neutral and independent humanitarian organization mandated to protect and assist victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence. Founded in 1863, it operates worldwide, providing essential services such as medical care, food, water, and shelter. The ICRC is in the news currently due to its involvement in two separate situations. First, it is likely involved in the exchange of deceased soldiers between Russia and Ukraine, a rare area of cooperation between the warring parties. Second, its humanitarian flights in northern Mali, along with those of the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS), have been suspended since March 30th, impacting aid delivery to the region. This suspension, the reasons for which remain unclear, highlights the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations in accessing conflict zones and delivering vital assistance.
