Hutu extremists

Hutu extremists were a key group responsible for orchestrating and carrying out the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This period of mass violence, which lasted approximately 100 days, resulted in the deaths of an estimated 800,000 people, primarily Tutsis and moderate Hutus. The recent sentencing of a Dutch-Rwandan man to life imprisonment in the Netherlands for war crimes and genocide, including throwing a grenade at Tutsis seeking shelter, highlights the ongoing legal repercussions and the international efforts to hold perpetrators accountable. While the genocide ended with the military victory of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) on Liberation Day, commemorated annually, the legacy of this horrific event continues to shape Rwanda's present and future.
