Kuomintang (KMT)

The Kuomintang (KMT) is Taiwan's largest opposition party. Historically, it governed mainland China before relocating to Taiwan after the Chinese Civil War. The KMT traditionally favors closer ties with mainland China, contrasting with the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP)'s more cautious approach. The KMT is newsworthy due to a recent visit to mainland China by its leader, Cheng Li-wun, who met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This marks the first such meeting in nearly a decade. The visit aimed to foster peace and prevent conflict across the Taiwan Strait. Following the meeting, China announced measures to resume some ties with Taiwan, including direct flights and imports of Taiwanese aquaculture products. This signals a potential shift in cross-strait relations and highlights the KMT's role as a potential mediator between Taiwan and China, especially given the DPP's strained relationship with Beijing.
