Tigrayan forces

Tigrayan forces are an armed group operating in Ethiopia's Tigray region. Their background is tied to the conflict that saw a Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed in November 2022, which had brought a period of apparent peace and reconstruction. However, recent developments indicate a resurgence of conflict. Tigrayan forces have reportedly taken control of Mekelle airport, leading Ethiopian Airlines to suspend flights to three northern Tigray airports due to the escalating situation. This escalation follows an announcement of an alliance between the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and six other armed groups. The return of fighting raises concerns about civilian vulnerability, especially given past atrocities and a perceived lack of accountability for previous abuses.
