Universidad de Yamanashi, specifically its Advanced Biotechnology Center, is a Japanese university known for its research in biotechnology. Recently, research from the university, led by Teruhiko Wakayama, has gained attention for a 20-year study on serial cloning in mice. The study investigated the limits of mammalian cloning by repeatedly cloning mice for 58 generations, creating over 1200 mice. The research found that after approximately 25 generations, the cloned mice began to exhibit mutations, and after 57 generations, cloning became incompatible with life. This research is significant because it demonstrates that cloning in mammals is not infinite and that repeated cloning leads to the accumulation of irreparable mutations, highlighting the importance of sexual reproduction for long-term viability.
