Agostina Páez, a 29-year-old Argentinian tourist, gained notoriety in Brazil due to two separate incidents. In January, while on vacation in Rio de Janeiro, Páez was accused of making racist remarks towards waiters in a bar near Ipanema beach. According to the prosecution, she allegedly called one waiter "negro" (black) and later imitated a monkey's gestures and sounds towards another. This led to legal proceedings against her in Brazil. In a separate event, on a train journey in Minas Gerais, Páez's seven-year-old son was reportedly filmed without consent by another Argentinian tourist. A fellow passenger alerted her, and upon confrontation, the man admitted to sending the images via WhatsApp. These incidents have brought Páez into the spotlight, contributing to a broader discussion in Argentina about its "European" self-image in light of racist incidents involving its citizens abroad.
