Giorgia Sommacal was among a group of five Italian divers who tragically died while exploring a deep underwater cave at a depth of approximately 50 meters in Vaavu Atoll, Maldives. The incident occurred on a Thursday, and the group was reportedly attempting to explore caves. Unfavorable weather conditions and the high-risk nature of the operation complicated the subsequent search and rescue efforts. Tragically, a Maldivian military diver also lost their life during the operation to recover the bodies of the Italian divers. Giorgia Sommacal was part of a team that included her mother, Monica Montefalcone, a professor of ecology from the University of Genoa, and a diving instructor.
