Monica Montefalcone

Monica Montefalcone was an Italian professor of ecology at the University of Genoa. She was among a group of five Italian divers who tragically died while exploring a deep underwater cave in the Maldives, approximately 50 meters (160 feet) in depth, in Vaavu Atoll. The incident occurred on a Thursday, and the Maldives military described the operation as very high risk, compounded by unfavorable weather conditions. A subsequent search and rescue operation to recover the bodies of the divers was underway, during which a Maldivian military diver also lost their life. The news is significant due to the loss of multiple lives, including an academic and the subsequent death of a rescuer, highlighting the extreme dangers of deep cave diving and the challenges faced by recovery efforts in difficult environments.
