Ronald Sakolsky

Ronald Sakolsky, a retired American teacher, is planning a trip to China to reunite with Yin Yuzhen, a farmer he supported decades ago. In 1999, while teaching English in China, Sakolsky was inspired by Yin's efforts to combat desertification in the Maowusu Desert. He donated US$5,000 to her tree-planting initiative, a contribution that helped Yin, who was later recognized as a National Model Worker by China's State Council in 2000 for her long-term anti-desertification work. Now, Yin has invited Sakolsky to visit the forest that grew from his initial funding. This reunion highlights the lasting impact of individual contributions to environmental efforts and serves as a symbol of hope, suggesting that if a teacher and a farmer can collaborate to grow a forest, global leaders can achieve peace.
