Artemis II astronauts on course to set new distance record during moon flyby
The Artemis II mission, carrying astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen, is set to break the distance record for human space travel during its lunar flyby on Monday. The Orion capsule will travel 5,000 miles beyond the moon, exceeding the Apollo 13 mission's record by roughly 4,000 miles. This six-hour flyby will provide the crew with unprecedented views of the moon's far side, including areas previously unobservable by Apollo missions, and a total solar eclipse. While behind the moon, the Orion capsule will experience a 40-minute communication blackout with mission control. The astronauts will document the lunar surface, bringing unseen portions of the moon's far side into view.
