Mercator map

The Mercator map, a widely used world map projection, is currently newsworthy due to a recent UN General Assembly vote to adopt a new map that more accurately reflects the true size of continents, particularly Africa. Sponsored by Togo and supported by African Union members, the resolution passed with 164 nations voting in favor, while the United States voted against it. The traditional Mercator projection, created in the 16th century, distorts the size of landmasses, making countries near the poles appear much larger than they are relative to equatorial regions. This distortion has led to criticisms that it perpetuates a Eurocentric view of the world. The UN's move signifies a global effort to move towards more geographically accurate representations, acknowledging the historical inaccuracies and potential biases of the Mercator projection and promoting a more equitable global perspective.
