Asian stock markets experienced mixed trading on Thursday as investors awaited outcomes from U.S. President Donald Trump's summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. While Wall Street reached new record highs, Asian indices showed varied performance. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 and South Korea's Kospi saw gains, supported by corporate results and technology stocks respectively, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng also rose. Conversely, Shanghai's Composite index declined, and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 edged down. Discussions between Trump and Xi focused on U.S.-China relations and Taiwan, though analysts anticipated no major breakthroughs. Oil prices were also higher, influenced by ongoing concerns over the Iran war and its impact on global oil inventories.

Asia markets index of Japan, South Korea and Australia is seen on a screen at the foreign exchange dealing room of the Hana Bank headquarters in Seoul, South Korea, Thursday, May 14, 2026. (AP Photo/Ahn Young-joon) 2026-05-14T05:01:52Z Hong Kong (AP) — Asian shares were mixed Thursday after Wall Street set more records, as investors closely monitored takeaways from U.S. President Donald Trump’s summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing. Trump met with Xi at the Great Hall of the People and they talked about U.S.-China relations and Taiwan, but analysts did not expect major breakthroughs. U.S. futures edged higher. Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index was up 0.3% to 63,448.87, after briefly reaching another all-time intraday record at above 63,700, partly supported by robust corporate results. South Korea’s Kospi was up 0.5% to 7,884.71, helped by technology-related stocks. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gained 0.7% to 26,584.88. The Shanghai Composite index lost 0.9% to 4,204.41. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 edged down less than 0.1% to 8,627.80. Taiwan’s Taiex was up 0.6%, and India’s Sensex climbed 0.5%. freestar.queue.push(function () { window.fsAdCount = window.fsAdCount + 1 || 0; let customChannel = '/dynamic_' + fsAdCount; let adList = document.querySelectorAll(".fs-feed-ad") let thisAd = adList[fsAdCount]; let randId = Math.random().toString(36).slice(2); thisAd.id = randId; let thisPlacement = fsAdCount == 0 ? Some were hoping the Trump-Xi meeting could bring results, after U.S. officials said Beijing could use its close economic ties with Tehran to press Iran to reopen the Strait or Hormuz. Brent crude, the international standard, was up 0.4% at $106.04 per barrel. It was around $70 a barrel before the war in Iran started late February. That also came after the International Energy Agency said Wednesday that supply losses from the strait were “depleting global oil inventories at a record pace.” /* Desktop-first: fully collapse by default */ #ap-readmore-embed { display: none;
