Balikatan

Balikatan is an annual joint military exercise between the Philippines and the United States. These exercises aim to enhance interoperability, strengthen alliances, and improve capabilities in areas such as disaster response, counterterrorism, and maritime security. Balikatan is newsworthy now because Japan is participating for the first time, sending approximately 300 elite ground soldiers for the Salaknib exercise. This marks a significant development in the Indo-Pacific security landscape, signaling a move away from bilateral engagements towards a more collaborative, “minilateral” approach involving US allies. The deployment of Japanese combat troops to the Philippines is also notable as it is the first time in 81 years since World War II. This expansion of Balikatan underscores the growing importance of regional security cooperation in response to evolving geopolitical challenges and the need for enhanced defense capabilities among allied nations.
