Deir Hafer

Deir Hafer is a town located in the eastern Aleppo Governorate of Syria. Recently, it has become newsworthy due to a shift in control between the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian army. Following an internationally-sponsored deal and talks with US officials, the SDF withdrew from Deir Hafer and dozens of other towns in the area, redeploying east of the Euphrates River. The Syrian army subsequently moved in, taking control of Deir Hafer and surrounding areas. Residents of Deir Hafer have been seen celebrating the Syrian army's arrival. This shift in territorial control is significant as it marks a change in the balance of power in the region and comes amid broader tensions between the Syrian government and Kurdish forces, despite a recent decree from President al-Sharaa granting Kurds new rights. The US has urged de-escalation as the Syrian army advances through previously Kurdish-held territory.
