Pacific Ocean

The Pacific Ocean is currently a focal point due to several significant weather and environmental developments. The strengthening of El Niño, predicted to be one of the strongest in decades, is a major concern, with potential impacts extending globally, including high winds affecting stressed trees in Europe. Closer to the Pacific, tropical storms are actively forming and moving. Hurricane Karina has strengthened in the Pacific, and Tropical Storm Julio has also formed, though it is not currently threatening land. Meanwhile, a storm system is moving towards Hawaii, and another, Hurricane Marie, previously caused dangerous conditions and large waves along the southern California coast. Furthermore, warming temperatures in the Pacific Ocean are being linked to intense rainfall events, such as the deadly flash flood in the Grand Canyon. The region is also relevant to conservation efforts, as evidenced by the seizure of marine iguanas being smuggled from the Galapagos Islands.
