Saint-Denis

Saint-Denis, a suburb of Paris, is currently in the news due to several significant issues. The area, often described as impoverished, is highlighted in discussions about social inequalities, particularly concerning the impact of heatwaves on low-income residents who lack access to cooling facilities, with some resorting to swimming in the Canal Saint-Denis. The suburb is also a focal point for debates surrounding immigration, as some young immigrants face deportation orders after graduating from high school. Furthermore, Saint-Denis has become a site of tension related to far-right activities; a planned far-right rally was prohibited by authorities due to concerns about public order, especially following a large anti-racism demonstration initiated by the new mayor, Bally Bagayoko. This demonstration was held in solidarity with Black elected officials from the La France Insoumise (LFI) party, who have filed complaints regarding racist letters and graffiti.
