Virunga National Park

Virunga National Park, located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), is Africa's oldest national park and a critical habitat for endangered mountain gorillas. The park is newsworthy due to the recent, rare births of two sets of mountain gorilla twins within a short period. The first set was born in early January, followed by another set discovered just two months later. These twin births are considered an “extraordinary” event, as they are uncommon, accounting for approximately 1% of gorilla births. The births offer a glimmer of hope for the conservation of this endangered species, despite the park frequently experiencing conflicts between the army and armed groups. Conservationists and park rangers are closely monitoring the mother gorillas and their newborns, highlighting the park's ongoing efforts to protect its gorilla population.
