Alawite

The Alawites are a religious minority group primarily located in Syria. Historically, they held significant power under Bashar al-Assad's regime. Following the fall of al-Assad in December 2024, the Alawite community has become increasingly vulnerable, making them newsworthy. Recent reports detail deadly fighting in Latakia, the Alawite heartland, prompting authorities to impose curfews. Alawite neighborhoods have been targeted in attacks, leading to arrests and heightened security tensions. Furthermore, women from the Alawite minority have reported instances of kidnap and rape. Protests have erupted due to a lack of security, particularly after a bombing at a mosque in a predominantly Alawite area, resulting in fatalities.
