Allied Democratic Forces (ADF)

The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) are an Islamist armed group originating from Uganda but now primarily operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Initially formed from Ugandan mosque disputes, they have become deeply entrenched in the forests of the DRC and are affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS). The ADF is newsworthy due to its continued attacks and the resulting humanitarian crisis. Recent events include successive attacks in the Mambasa territory of Ituri, DRC, in early March, leading to mass displacement of the population towards Bafwasende and Kisangani. A recent report indicates a sharp rise in jihadist violence in the DRC in the past year. The ADF's activities contribute to a significant increase in terrorism-related deaths in the region, making them a major security concern and a driver of instability in Central Africa.
