MiDNI

MiDNI is a mobile application developed in Spain that allows citizens to carry a digital version of their Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI), the national identity document, on their smartphones. It was launched and became legally valid for identification purposes on April 2, 2026, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the electronic DNI in Spain. The app connects to the central DNI issuance system to ensure validity and authenticity, enabling users to identify themselves in various public and private settings, such as opening bank accounts, registering at hotels, and signing documents. However, the Junta Electoral Central (JEC) has temporarily suspended the use of MiDNI for voting in elections until security concerns regarding identity verification are addressed. Despite this setback, MiDNI represents a significant step towards digitalizing identification processes in Spain.
