Royal Thai Navy

The Royal Thai Navy (RTN) is the naval branch of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, responsible for maritime defense and security. It is currently newsworthy due to two main factors. First, a Thai-registered cargo ship, the Mayuree Naree, was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial waterway, requiring the RTN to respond and rescue the 20 crew members. Images released by the RTN showed the ship heavily damaged. Second, Thailand, a US treaty ally, is increasingly procuring Chinese-made weaponry, including ships and armored vehicles. The Royal Thai Army recently finalized a deal for additional VN-1 armored vehicles. This trend highlights Thailand's pragmatic approach to defense procurement and its evolving relationship with both the US and China, making the RTN's role and capabilities strategically significant.
