USS Benfold

The USS Benfold (DDG 65) is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer in the U.S. Navy. Recently, the vessel became newsworthy due to a significant engineering casualty. On July 24, the destroyer experienced a breakdown involving its generators, resulting in a complete loss of power. This malfunction left the ship, with approximately 300 sailors aboard, adrift and without power for four consecutive days. The incident occurred in the South China Sea while the Benfold was reportedly operating with the George Washington carrier strike group. Following the breakdown, the USS Benfold was towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines. This event highlights potential strains on deployed military assets and personnel, raising concerns about the operational readiness and maintenance of naval vessels.
