El Bocal

El Bocal is a coastal area in Santander, Spain, now known for the collapse of a pedestrian walkway (pasarela) on March 3rd, resulting in the deaths of six young people. The incident has triggered a legal investigation to determine responsibility for the structure's maintenance. Recent developments show the judge overseeing the case has identified the Coastal Authority (Demarcación de Costas), a branch of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, as the primary entity responsible for the pasarela's upkeep. Criminal charges are being pursued against two officials from this authority. Additionally, the operator of the 112 emergency service, who received a warning about the pasarela's condition the day before the collapse, is also under investigation. The local council has also cordoned off a natural bridge near the site as a safety precaution. Public demonstrations have been held, demanding accountability for the tragedy. The incident has also prompted the closure of part of El Sardinero beach due to structural risks.
