Haiti is currently facing a severe crisis marked by escalating gang violence and political instability. The country is newsworthy due to the recent deployment of an international anti-gang force, the Force de répression des gangs (FRG), led by coordinator Jack Christofides. A first contingent from Chad has arrived, with plans for up to 5,500 troops from 18 countries to be deployed in Port-au-Prince by October 2026, following the withdrawal of Kenyan troops. This deployment comes in response to a surge in gang-related violence, including recent "brutal and coordinated" attacks in Petite-Rivière-de-l'Artibonite that resulted in at least 70 deaths, according to the UN. The UN has alerted to the gravity of the security situation. Simultaneously, the Haitian government is considering revisions to the electoral calendar, potentially delaying the organization of upcoming elections.
