Lake Tanganyika

Lake Tanganyika is a large lake in Central Africa, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Tanzania, and Zambia. It is currently newsworthy due to the ongoing conflict involving the M23 rebel group in the eastern DRC. Recent events include the M23 seizing the border town of Uvira, located on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, and subsequently pushing further south along the lake. This advance has led to significant displacement, with over 90,000 Congolese fleeing across the border into Burundi. The reopening of the Congo-Burundi border at Kavimvira, near Uvira, has allowed some refugees to return to the DRC. The M23's control and movement along Lake Tanganyika are strategically significant, potentially reshaping control over areas in eastern DRC and impacting regional stability and humanitarian efforts.
