Gelida

Gelida is a municipality located approximately 40 kilometers (23 miles) outside of Barcelona, in the Catalonia region of northeastern Spain. It is currently newsworthy due to a recent train derailment that occurred there on January 20, 2026. A commuter train crashed after hitting a retaining wall that collapsed onto the tracks. The accident resulted in the death of the train driver and injuries to at least 37 other people. The incident has placed Spain's rail network under scrutiny, occurring just days after a separate, more deadly train collision in Adamuz, southern Spain. The Gelida derailment has contributed to a nationwide strike called by Spanish train drivers demanding improved safety measures and highlighting concerns about the railway's infrastructure and maintenance.
