Mount Bulusaraung

Mount Bulusaraung is a mountain located in South Sulawesi province, Indonesia. It is characterized by forested terrain and is often covered in fog. The mountain is newsworthy due to the recent crash of an Indonesian Air Transport ATR 42-500 turboprop aircraft on its slopes. The plane, carrying 11 people (initially reported as 10), including three fisheries ministry employees, lost contact with air traffic control while en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar on January 17, 2026. A search and rescue operation was launched, and wreckage from the missing plane has been discovered in a forested area on the mountain's slope. As of January 18, 2026, rescuers have recovered the body of one victim from the crash site. The incident highlights the challenges of aviation in mountainous regions and the importance of search and rescue efforts in remote areas.
