Mount Bulusaraung

Mount Bulusaraung is a mountain located in South Sulawesi province, Indonesia. It is newsworthy due to a recent plane crash on its slopes. On January 17, 2026, an ATR 42-500 turboprop plane operated by Indonesia Air Transport, carrying 11 people, lost contact with air traffic control while approaching a mountainous region, later confirmed to be Mount Bulusaraung. The plane was en route from Yogyakarta to Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi. A search and rescue operation was launched, and wreckage was discovered on the mountain's fog-covered, forested slopes. As of January 18, 2026, one body had been recovered from the crash site. The incident highlights the challenges of aviation in mountainous regions and the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
