Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF)

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are the national army of Sudan and a primary party in the ongoing Sudanese civil war, which began in April 2023. They are currently newsworthy due to their continued conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for control of the country. Recent events include the SAF's renewed military effort to retake Kordofan and Darfur from the RSF, surpassing their previous recapture of Khartoum State. The SAF-aligned government has also returned to Khartoum after operating from Port Sudan. The RSF has accused the SAF of attacking a crucial border crossing near Chad. The conflict between the SAF and RSF has created a massive humanitarian crisis, displacing millions, causing acute food insecurity, and straining resources in neighboring countries like Chad and South Sudan, where the army has moved to secure the Heglig oilfield.
