About

Renfe is the national railway company of Spain. It operates passenger and freight trains throughout the country and internationally. Recently, Renfe has been in the news for both setbacks and significant investments. The company has suspended its planned high-speed rail link between Spain and Paris, citing homologation issues and delays, potentially linked to SNCF. This project was initially slated to be ready for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Simultaneously, Renfe has launched a major tender, described as the "most important in its history," to purchase 30-40 new generation high-speed trains (TGVs). This acquisition, potentially costing between 1.362 and 1.77 billion euros, aims to modernize its fleet. This decision comes two months after a deadly train accident near Adamuz. Despite these investments, Renfe is also facing challenges, including a decline in passenger numbers on the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed line, attributed to rising ticket prices following the end of the AVLO low-cost service.
